this original painting, entitled "farm & fields family" captures some of the wildlife that lives right outside my studio. I am fortunate to reside on about ten acres of land adjacent to an almost-300-acre arboretum, so nature is an ever-present source of inspiration.

these textural, mixed media paintings are done on the actual hand carved wood set in this folk style wood frame created in the 1880s. the frame initially displayed tin-type family photos. there are pieces of fabric on the backs of the paintings with the handwritten names and dates of the individuals originally featured in the frame. I loved the fabric too much to remove it. I am unsure if the dates listed are birthdays, deaths; in one case, a wedding anniversary, or the day the tin-type photograph was taken. I always love things with a past, a story.

what makes this piece special: besides being created on wood from the 1880s, materials include handwritten antique letters from the 1800s, book linings from the 1800s, gold leaf, vintage papers, and vintage postage stamps.

size is approximately 12" in width, and 17" in height. the painting is about .5" in depth. this frame is an antique and has some beautiful wear from age. should you decide to reframe the paintings, they can be removed through the back of the frame with care. I used the original antique nails to set the paintings in the frame. the paintings and frame have been signed on the back.

this work is part of the ongoing objet d'art series: a series of mixed materials paintings on carved wood set in antique frames. I only acquire antique frames where I can "picture" who is going to live in the frame. I consider the frame and the art a single piece of art.
