this original, textural, mixed media painting of a barn owl is done on a piece of hand carved birch wood and framed in an antique hand-carved, hand painted Victorian era Folk Art wood frame. the maker's initials are on the back of the frame: VF, with the year 1885.

a continuation of the objet d'art series: a series of vintage and antique frames filled with original paintings on hand carved birch wood. the art and the frame are considered one piece, and the art has been created for its particular frame.

for the painting: materials are applied layer by layer and then allowed to dry before the next application. this gives the paintings a great amount of depth and detail. the barn owl rest on a background of deep forest green. tones of the painting are meant to enhance the faded reds and greens of the handcrafted frame.

mixed media includes vintage postage stamp, contemporary paper, handwritten letters from the 1800's, and gold leaf. a painting of a tree branch has been added: the tree branch painting is on antique cotton fabric. i used sewing thread to enhance the tree branch.

i recommend displaying the painting in indirect light to protect the artwork.

size is approximately 9" in width, and 13" in height. the painting is about .5" in depth. all of my paintings can be handled. they look great on their own, or buy a bunch and display them together!
